Upon returning, he took the identity of Green Lantern, defending both the Earth and the Universe with his newfound power.

Biography[]

Silver Age[]

Youth[]

Harold "Hal" Jordan was born to Martin and Jessica Jordan in Coast City and was was raised alongside his older brother, Jack and younger brother, Jim. Hal was enamored with his father, a test pilot for the company Ferris Aircraft and was devastated the day his father died in an on the job crash. Hal decided to follow in his father's footsteps and at age 18 joined the United States Air Force. Over time, he became an extremely skilled Air Force pilot and eventually left to become a test pilot for Ferris Aircraft.

Green Lantern's Might[]

Years later, Hal Jordan was drawn to the crash site of an alien spaceship in the Californian desert. The pilot of the craft was Abin Sur, a member of an intergalactic organization known as the Green Lantern Corps, who were tasked with protecting the universe from evil and danger. Each member of the organization had a special ring, the Green Lantern Ring, which could allow its user to turn thoughts into form made of green light energy, creating hard light constructs of whatever the user imagined. In addition to that was a Power Battery, to recharge the ring any time it ran out of energy. Abin Sur gave the ring to Jordan, who was deemed worthy to possess it and became the Green Lantern of his sector of space. Soon after, Abin Sur died from his injuries.

Jordan became an intergalactic police officer of sorts, charged with protecting the space in the universe called Sector 2814, where Earth resides. Jordan travelled to the planet Oa, central base of the Green Lanterns, to be debriefed on his duties by the Guardians, the entities who created and organize the Green Lanterns. There he learned he was one of 3600 Lanterns, all who control one sector of space and make up an army called The Green Lantern Corps. Jordan recieved training on use of the Green Lantern ring and education on the rules of the Green Lanterns from Kilowog, a strict but dedicated drill sergeant. He also gained a mentor in Sinestro, a Lantern considered the greatest among the Corps.

Hal later learned that Sinestro did keep peace but through a tyrannous rule using his ring to instill fear across his sector. He warned the Guardians and the other lanterns who confronted Sinestro and with the Corps' help, Hal managed to defeat him in his first major victory. Hal testified at Sinestro's trial and Sinestro was banished to Qward, a planet located in an anti-matter universe, causing him to swear vengeance on the Corps and Hal in particular. From then on, Hal protected his own world and travelled to others within his sector to protect it. He maintained his civilian work, working for Ferris Aircraft as a test pilot. He also became friends with Tom Kalmaku, a young Inuit mechanic who would become his close confidante.

In other media[]

He is the main character in the films Green Lantern, Green Lantern: First Flight, and one of the important characters in the animated film Justice League: A New Frontier and Justice League: Doom.

This character appears in the cartoon Super Friends, The Batman, Batman The Brave and the bold, and in the cartoon Superman: Animated Series, the character Kyle Rayner is placed becoming a green lantern in a situation very similar to that of Hal Jordan (like neither appears in this cartoon), but with the difference that instead of Abin Sur sending his ring to bring the person chosen to replace him, he ordered the ring to go to the person and bring him to him. Hal Jordan is a character from the web series DC Super Hero Girls, and from the television cartoon of the same name.
